Physical Education Department Goals:
The goals of the middle school physical education curriculum are for students to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to establish and maintain personal fitness, perform basic motor and manipulative skills in a variety of activities, and to develop the ability to create and maintain a safe and healthy environment.
To attain this goal, the curriculum focuses on the acquisition and refinement of sport specific motor skills, fundamental strategic play, decision making principles, as well as basic knowledge of rules, conventions, and appropriate behavior through a variety of modified game-like activities and situations.
Students also focus on the comprehension of fitness concepts through the students’ abilities to evaluate their own fitness levels, personal goal setting and fitness program planning. Emphasis is on the knowledge of health-related and skill-related fitness components, principles of exercise and health risk factors.
A third focus is the comprehension of personal and social responsibility concepts. Students will identify specific behaviors consistent with safety, character, civility and citizenship related to sports and physical activities. These concepts are embedded in each modified activity through the instruction and reinforcement of sportsmanship, camaraderie and the enjoyment of play.

Physical Education is based upon the acquisition of knowledge and skills as a foundation for engaging in physical activity. However, the mere acquisition of knowledge and skills is not enough. The mission of physical education is to enable all students to sustain regular, lifelong physical activity as a foundation for a healthy, productive, and fulfilling life. Our vision is to provide all students with a sequential program based on physical activities undertaken in an active, caring, supportive, meaningful and non-threatening atmosphere in which every student is challenged and successful.
Scheduling: When the opportunity presents itself, we try to split classes into groupings that include grades 9-10 and 11-12. This enables us to focus curriculum on specific areas of fitness and activities based on student grade levels.
