At Jericho School District, we believe that student success is built on a strong foundation of academic, social, and emotional support. Our Student Support Services team is committed to fostering the well-being of every learner by providing guidance, resources, and individualized support throughout each stage of their educational journey. Through the collaborative work of our school counselors, school psychologists, and support staff, we strive to create a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment where all students can grow, thrive, and reach their fullest potential.

    Functions of a School Psychologist

School psychologists are integral members of the educational team who work collaboratively with students, families, teachers, and administrators to promote students' academic, social, emotional, and behavioral success. Their work focuses on creating positive learning environments, supporting student well-being, and helping all students develop the skills needed to thrive in school.

School psychologists provide consultation to school staff, collaborate in problem-solving and intervention planning, participate in multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), and assist in identifying strategies that promote student growth. They also conduct evaluations, when appropriate, to help determine educational needs and inform individualized supports and services.

If a parent has concerns about their child's social, emotional, or behavioral adjustment at school, the first step is to contact the child's classroom teacher. The teacher, together with the school's support team—including the school psychologist and other student support professionals—will work collaboratively to determine appropriate next steps and identify supports that best meet the student's needs.

  • Functions of a School Social Worker

School social workers are essential members of the school community who support students' social, emotional, behavioral, and mental wellness so they can fully engage in learning. They partner with students, families, teachers, administrators, and community agencies to foster a safe, supportive, and inclusive school environment for all learners.

School social workers provide consultation and collaboration with school staff, facilitate individual and small-group interventions, support positive school attendance and engagement, connect families with school and community resources, and assist in crisis prevention and response. They are active participants in school-based problem-solving teams and help develop strategies that strengthen students' social-emotional skills and overall well-being.

If a parent has concerns about their child's social-emotional development, behavior, or adjustment to school, the first step is to reach out to the child's classroom teacher. The teacher will collaborate with the appropriate members of the school's support team—including the school social worker and school psychologist—to identify concerns, develop strategies, and determine whether additional supports are needed.
