Jericho School District Curriculum
A message from Dr. Ivy Sherman
The mission of the Jericho School District—success for every student—guides our commitment to creating an educational environment centered on the needs of each individual learner. We provide a wide range of programs, opportunities, and services designed to support students as they excel academically, build meaningful relationships, and explore their interests and talents.
Our goals are to foster a diverse and engaging learning community, prepare students to be college and career ready, support social-emotional growth and resilience, and strengthen communication and collaboration across our community.
Through rigorous curriculum, innovative instructional practices, professional development, and expanded social-emotional learning initiatives, Jericho continues to provide students with opportunities to think critically, solve problems, communicate effectively, collaborate, and apply their learning in meaningful ways.

Standards and Instruction
Standards vs. Curriculum: What’s the Difference?
The New York State Learning Standards outline what students should learn, but they are not a curriculum.
New York State does not require or provide a specific curriculum. Instead, each school district—including Jericho—makes its own decisions about how to teach the standards based on the needs of its students.
What Are Standards?
Standards define the skills and knowledge students are expected to develop at each stage of their education. They serve as a roadmap to ensure all students are working toward consistent learning goals across New York State.
What Is Curriculum?
Curriculum is how those standards come to life in the classroom.
It includes:
- What is taught (content and concepts)
- The order in which it is taught (sequence)
- How it is taught (lessons and instruction)
- The materials used (books, resources, tools)
- How learning is measured (assessments)
Curriculum is typically organized into units and lessons and is designed to give students meaningful opportunities to meet the standards.
Who Decides the Curriculum?
Curriculum is developed locally by school districts and educators. In Jericho, this means our teachers and administrators:
- Select or design instructional materials
- Plan lessons and learning experiences
- Adjust instruction to meet the needs of all students
All curriculum is aligned with New York State Learning Standards, but it is tailored to reflect our community, students, and educational goals.
What Are Curricular Materials?
Curricular materials are the resources used to support learning, such as:
- Textbooks
- Digital tools and online platforms
- Workbooks and primary sources
- Teacher-created lessons and activities
What Is Curriculum Guidance?
Curriculum guidance helps educators strengthen teaching and learning. This can include:
- Suggested instructional strategies
- Tools to evaluate curriculum effectiveness
- Sample activities and learning experiences
- Curriculum maps and planning guides
